Spotlight
Titles you have downloaded and files you have opened are offered in Spotlight from the Home Screen.
- Type part of the name and photon’s results appear alongside everything else.
- Selecting one opens it in photon directly.
- Nothing is looked up on the way, so it works with no network at all.
The index is this device’s own, so it covers what is on the device rather than everything on your servers. A title you have never downloaded or opened is found through the app’s own Search instead.
Handoff
Start something on your phone and the same title is offered on your Mac or iPad, at the point you had reached.
To use it, both devices need to be:
- Signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Near each other, with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on.
- Able to reach the same server.
The handover names the position you were at, not the last position the server was told, so the second device opens where you actually stopped.
What can be handed over
| A title from a server | Yes. |
| A file you opened yourself | No. It is on that device, and the other one has no copy. |
| A Live TV channel | No. A subscription is not addressable the way a server’s title is. |
Photon matches the server by the address you typed rather than by an internal id, so it finds the right server even when the two devices added it separately. One consequence: a server you reach at two different addresses — a local one on the phone and a remote one on the Mac — looks like two servers, and a handover between them will not resolve.
Neither Spotlight nor Handoff exists on Apple TV. Watch progress from your server is what continues a title there, and the Top Shelf is where you pick it up.
